Acoustic glossary
Short, accurate definitions of the terms you meet in specifications.
- αw — Weighted sound absorption coefficient
- A single-number absorption rating per EN ISO 11654, ranging from 0.00 (fully reflective) to 1.00 (fully absorptive). Specifications often express it as a class from A to E: Class A means αw ≥ 0.90.
- NRC — Noise Reduction Coefficient
- The average of absorption coefficients at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. It is a North American metric — close to αw but not identical, and the two should not be used interchangeably.
- RT60 — Reverberation time
- The time for sound pressure level to fall by 60 dB after the source stops. It is the fundamental descriptor of a room's acoustic character: around 0.5 s is targeted in an office, while a concert hall may call for 1.8 s.
- STI — Speech Transmission Index
- A 0-to-1 scale showing how intact speech reaches the listener. Conference halls call for 0.60 and above; emergency announcement systems require at least 0.50.
- Helmholtz resonator
- The principle by which the cavity behind a perforated panel resonates at a given frequency and converts sound energy into heat. Hole diameter, open area ratio and cavity depth set that frequency.
- Diffuser
- A surface that scatters sound in a controlled way instead of absorbing it. Used where excess absorption would deaden the room but the energy still needs redirecting (QRD, Skyline).
- B-s1,d0 — Reaction to fire class
- Under EN 13501-1, B means very limited combustibility, s1 very low smoke production, and d0 no flaming droplets. This is usually the minimum requirement in public buildings and escape routes.
- Distraction distance (rD)
- Per ISO 3382-3, the distance at which speech intelligibility drops below a defined threshold. It is the single most meaningful metric for open-plan office acoustics; under 5 metres is considered good.
Frequently asked questions
- Are sound insulation and acoustic treatment the same thing?
- No, they solve different problems. Sound insulation stops sound passing between spaces and depends on mass and mass-spring-mass construction. Acoustic treatment corrects how sound behaves inside a space — reverberation, echo, intelligibility. Acoustic panels address the second; they will not stop sound reaching the neighbour.
- How much of the surface needs to be panelled?
- There is no fixed percentage; it comes out of the volume, the absorption of existing surfaces and the target reverberation time. In practice a typical office lands around 60–80% of the ceiling, a conference hall around 30–45% of total surface area. Any square-metre figure given without a calculation is a guess.
- Do timber panels comply with fire regulations?
- With fire-retardant treated MDF the class reaches B-s1,d0, and with a cement-bonded substrate A2-s1,d0. In Türkiye the Fire Protection Regulation for Buildings sets the minimum class by building category and use; escape corridors and assembly buildings carry stricter requirements. A declaration of the achieved class is supplied with every delivery.
- What is the lead time?
- With standard finishes, production takes 3–5 weeks after the approved drawings, and installation time depends on the area. Special veneers, bespoke colours and OA-Custom work take 6–8 weeks including prototype approval. A firm programme is issued with the quotation.
- Do you measure after installation?
- Yes. After installation we measure reverberation time under ISO 3382 and hand over a report comparing the result with the original target. If any frequency band falls short of the target, correcting it is our obligation.
- Do you work on projects abroad?
- Yes. Manufacturing takes place in Türkiye; installation is either carried out by our own crew or by the local contractor's team under our training and site supervision. Export documentation, CE declaration and shipping are organised by us.
